Today’s generation of students looks at technology as part of their everyday environment. To fully meet their needs, technology should be pervasive — always available. In Ivanhoe’s Technology Program, 2nd-5th grade students have access to a wireless laptop to use at school, enabling communication and collaboration among peers and teachers, and connecting parents to their children’s learning. Educators are provided digital tools to create learning plans, manage educational content, track student progress, and more. The goal of the program is simple: To provide students with the best educational experience today that will prepare them for success in the world of tomorrow.
WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM?
A key component of Ivanhoe’s Technology Program is to increase student achievement and engagement by incorporating technology in standards-based projects across the curriculum. Students are provided with the opportunity to share and work collaboratively on the creation of their projects using Apple applications such as iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Keynote, PowerPoint, iBooks Author, Sketchup and other production and web-based applications. In order to achieve this aim, all fifth grade students are provided with their own laptops that they use to complete projects in school. Fourth grade students are provided with laptops every day in school and computer instruction is provided to primary students weekly with access to a mobile wireless lab. The instruction for primary grades will prepare students for the fourth and fifth grade classrooms. In addition, a professional development plan has been developed and implemented to train teachers in the technological applications available to them and in how to utilize these tools to maximize instruction and learning.
